1. Use this exfoliating hack
There's a reason your lipstick looks cakey. Hint: it has NOTHING to do with your lipstick. It's cos your lips are full of dry skin. Gross. Make your lips smoother than Richie (K, so that won't be too hard #bless) by exfoliating them with a mascara wand. For reals. Layer on loads on lip balm, then use a disposable mascara wand (important: you don't want black lips) to buff off all the dead skin. Genius!
2. Pick a product that looks matte butfeels satiny
The problem with most matte lipsticks is that they behave like douchebag guys, saying one thing and doing the exact opposite. HELPFUL. Pick a "good guy" matte lipstick that puts your comfort and needs first. It needs to have the right balance of matte powders and lightweight oils so that it's legit opaque, but comfortable to wear all day long. Bonus: it won't drag when you apply it either. Yas.
3. Learn from Blair Waldorf
Leighton Meester is a MEGABABE. But that doesn't mean she gets it right every time. Reason #769 why we love the Upper East Side Kween. Back in the day she experimented with a ~FLAWLESS~ matte red lip which she teamed with an intense purple smoky eye. Tbf Leighton still looks like a total vixen, but IRL matte lipstick should be the only bold beauty statement you make. It's kick-ass enough on its own so pare the rest of your face back and let you lips do all the talking. Literally.
4. Suck your lipstick tube
Umm, yes. We're asking you to do that. Cos, even though matte lipstick isn't as slip 'n slidey as gloss, it can still get in places it shouldn't. Namely the inside of your lips which is when it transfers onto your teeth #FAIL. Sucking on your lipstick might make you feel like a bit of a creep, but it's the easiest way to ensure your teeth stay lipstick-free. Thanks for the inspo, Kim!
5. Prep 24/7 like a boss
PSA: applying lip balm three seconds before you apply your lipstick is a bit late. Soz. Lip balm is good, but it's not that good. If you really want your matte lipstick to look good, start RN. Apply lip balm daily so that you have a super-smooth canvas that's ready for your fave shade whenever. Too easy.
