Why You Should Be Applying Eye Cream To Uour Lips Too

This hack, though 💯.

If I've learned anything from makeup artists backstage, it's that every makeup product can serve a dual purpose. Lipstick can be swiped on the cheeks as blush. Eyeliner can fill in sparse brows. Eyeshadow can be patted on the lips. The possibilities are endless. Pigment is pigment, right? But for skincare, it was a different story—I always compartmentalised my treatments. That changed, however, when I learned one of my most easy-yet-game-changing beauty hacks to date: Using eye cream on the lips.

And here's why it makes so much sense: The skin around the eye area is extremely delicate —as is that of the lips. This is why both areas are where wrinkles tend to form first. Another pitfall of our pouts is that they don't have the sebaceous glands that keep the rest of our face moisturised. So this is where an eye cream, packed with a slew of active ingredients to deeply hydrate, increase volume, improve definition, smooth, and prevent/minimise lines, really comes into play.

Yes, you could invest in an anti-ageing lip treatment on its own (we happen to love Peter Thomas Roth's Unwrinkle Lip Treatment), but c'mon, the lazy girl inside us all loves a 2-for-1 product and step. Plus, it's a dermatologist-approved hack and your pre-gloss lips will thank you in the morning.

"Eye creams are usually very safe because they have been tested for if they get in and or near the eye," says Marianne Pistilli, PA of Schweiger Dermatology in NYC."One of my favourite eye creams is Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair–I slather it on my undereyes and eyelids, and whatever is leftover on my finger, I put on my lips."

If slathering your entire pout in eye cream sounds like a little much, at the very least tap it into the contours of your upper lip and on your smile lines. This habit will do wonders in the long run.

1. Slough away dead cells to reveal softer, more luminous skin. Even if you already use a physical exfoliator (a formula boasting scrubbing beads to buff your complexion), adding a chemical exfoliator to your regimen will make a big difference in the look and feel of your skin. Once a week (or twice, depending on how sensitive your skin is), skip using your usual serum or moisturizer, and replace it with a leave-on chemical exfoliator, like Le Weekend De Chanel Weekly Renewing Face Care, which uses ingredients like glycolic acid to exfoliate your skin deeply, cleansing your pores of dirt, oil, bacteria, and debris that can lead to breakouts, and rose water to help calm the skin as the exfoliator does its work. Just remember to apply sunscreen immediately afterward, since it will make your skin sensitive to the sun's rays.
