31 Things Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Said in Their First Joint Interview Since Getting Engaged

Following their engagement announcement on Monday, Meghan Markle and fiancé Prince Harry sat down for a joint interview with the BBC's Mishal Husain. The interview aired across major networks in the UK and included everything from the couple's proposal story to Meghan's relationship with Queen Elizabeth's corgis to Harry revealing what his mother Princess Diana would think of his bride-to-be today. 1. "It happened a few weeks ago, earlier this month… it was here at our cottage. It was a standard, typical night for us." – Harry on his proposal

2. "Just a cozy night, it was, what were we doing, just roasting chicken, trying to roast a chicken… It was an amazing surprise. It was so sweet and natural. Very romantic. He got on one knee." – Meghan on Harry's proposal

3. "It was a nice moment, it was the two of us. I think I managed to catch her by surprise as well." – Harry on his proposal

4. "We never went longer than two weeks without seeing each other, even though we were doing a long-distance relationship. We made it work." – Meghan

5. "We should protect her privacy and not reveal too much of that." – Meghan on the mutual friend who introduced her to Harry

6. "And then it was about three, maybe four weeks later that I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana and we camped out with each other under the stars. She came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic." – Harry on his first big trip with Meghan

7. "It was definitely a set up. It was a blind date." – Meghan on meeting Harry for the first time

8. "The only thing I had asked her when she said she wanted to set us up was, 'Is he nice?'" – Meghan on the conversation she had with their mutual friend

9. "We met for a drink and then very quickly, we said, 'Well what are we doing tomorrow? We should meet again.'" – Meghan on their first date

10. "I never watched Suits, I never heard of Meghan before. I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her and there she was sitting there. I was like, 'OK I really have to up my game here.'" – Harry

11. "It was refreshing. Given that I didn't know a lot about him, everything I learned about him, I learned through him." – Meghan

12. "It was just a choice, right? I think that very early on, we realized we were going to commit to each other. We knew we had to invest the time and the energy and whatever it took to make that happen. So yes, with the filming schedule, it was not the easiest. It of course included a lot of travel, back and forth." – Meghan

"I tried to warn you as much as possible but I think both of us were totally surprised by the reaction after the first five, six months that we had to ourselves, of what actually happened from then. I think you can have as many conversations as you want and try and prepare as much as possible but we were totally unprepared for what happened after that." – Harry

14. "I've never been part of tabloid culture… pop culture to that degree and lived relatively a quiet life, even though I focused so much on my job. That was a really stark difference out of the gate… We were just hit so hard with mistruths. I never read anything, positive or negative… We just focused our energy into nurturing our relationship." – Meghan

15. "Of course it's disheartening. It's a shame that that is the climate in this world to focus that much on that, or that would be discriminatory… At the end of the day, I'm really just proud of who I am and where I come from. We have never put any focus on that. We've just focused on who we are as a couple." – Meghan

16. "For me, it's an added member of the family, another team player as part of the bigger team. The fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly was a confirmation to me that all the stars were aligned, everything was perfect. This beautiful woman literally tripped and fell into my life, and I fell into her life." – Harry

18. "I know that I'm in love with this girl and I hope that she's in love with me. But we still had to sit down on the sofa and have some pretty frank conversations with her to say, 'What you're letting yourself in for, it's a big deal. It's not easy for anybody.' I know that at the end of the day, she chooses me, and I choose her. And therefore, whatever we have to tackle together, or individually, it'll always be us together as a team." – Harry on having "the talk" with Meghan

"We've had to reverse the whole process, cozy nights in in front of the television, cooking dinner, by ourselves in our little cottage, rather than going out to dinner and being seen in public… [It] provided different opportunities, and it's made us a hell of a lot closer in a shorter space of time. That's without question. If anybody else at home is listening, maybe slow down the dates and maybe spend more time at home." – Harry

24. "We were able to get to know each other that way. Just to take the time to be able to go on long country walks and just talk." – Meghan

25. "It's incredible. I think… to be able to meet her through his lens, not just with his honor and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother. All of those layers have been so important for me. When I met her, I had such a deep understanding and of course incredible respect for being able to have that time with her. 27. "My grandparents have been wonderful. They've know for quite some time. How they haven't told anybody again is a miracle in itself." – Harry

28. "The ring is obviously yellow gold because that's her favorite. The main stone itself I sourced from Botswana. The little diamonds on the side are from my mother's jewelry collection to make sure she's with us on this crazy journey together." – Harry on Meghan's engagement ring and the connection to Princess Diana

29. "I think everything about Harry's thoughtfulness and the inclusion of that, obviously not being able to meet his mom, it's so important to me to know that she's part of this with us." – Meghan

30. "I think they'd be thick as thieves. She would be over the moon, jumping up and down, so excited for me. But then, as I said, would have been best friends with Meghan." – Harry on what his mom would have thought of Meghan

31. "It's days like today when I really miss having her around and miss being able to share the happy news. With the ring, I'm sure she's with us, jumping up and down somewhere else." – Harry
