The Major Mistake You're Making When You Apply Blush

Once blush goes from mystifying to ooh, I get it now, you really do wonder what the hell you looked liked without it. A sculpted pop of color provides instant gratification to even the most morningiest of morning faces.

Still, as the revival of the "draping" technique (AKA contouring with blush) has reminded us, there are a variety of ways to approach blusher. It's an art I'm always studying and I recently picked up a trick from Gilbert Soliz, global makeup artist for Marc Jacobs beauty, that's changed everything. Like, flipped it and reversed it.

As is the case for most, I'd always applied blush starting from the apples of my cheeks and sweeping outwards along the length of the cheekbone. However, for someone redness prone like me, this was actually a mistake.

"Where ever the brush hits first, is usually where you get the most payoff because that's where the most product is deposited," explains Soliz. And, if you're naturally flushed like me, this puts extra "warmth" where you might already have it.

Not to mention, tapering the blush at apples of the cheeks changes the angles of the face and contributes to a more feline, Bella-Hadid-like sculpt.

"Starting further back at the temples and working inward allows you to create a slimmer more lifted and defined effect." In other words, it's an on-the-spot face lift.

This isn't to say that you have to go against the grain and stop showing the apples of cheeks as much love (it adds volume to your face, after all), but it's definitely been a game changer for me. The highs of the cheekbone are not to be underestimated!
