Revealed: This Spice is the Key to Good Digestion

Just a sprinkle of cinnamon into your oats, your coffee or well... anything really, could lower your stomach temperature and help your digestion.

The diet tip comes courtesy of a new study, carried out by the RMIT University School of Engineering in Melbourne, which looked into the digestive health of pigs.

Using gas sensor capsules, researchers discovered that the addition of cinnamon into the diet of the pigs helped lower carbon dioxide levels in their gut and subsequently, cooled them down.

The results, published in the Scientific Reports journal, also indicated that the pigs who were fed foods which included cinnamon exhibited improved overall health.

The study's leader, Professor Kouroush Kalantar-Zadeh, explained to The Telegraph: 'When pigs feed at room temperature, carbon dioxide (CO2) gas increases in their stomach.

'Cinnamon in their food reduces this gas by decreasing the secretion of gastric acid and pepsin from the stomach walls, which in turn cools the pigs' stomach during digestion.'

He also explained that the spice protected the stomach lining and small intestines.

The researchers are convinced that, though the experiment was conducted on pigs, the beneficial properties would transfer to humans, concluding that: 'Such information may permit new insights that will underpin future research into pathogenesis of gastrointestinal disorders, dietary and drug effects, and clinical diagnostic applications.'

So, it seems digestive health is as easy as A,B,C(innamon)
