You Can Now FaceTime Over WhatsApp

Because all of our favourite apps seem to be amalgamating into more or less the same thing anyway, Whatsapp is now allowing users to FaceTime their friends in the app. Well, it's not ​actual​ FaceTime, but it basically is.

According to ​The Verge​, the popular instant messaging app is expanding its services to allow us to look at one another's pretty faces as well as spamming each other with poop emojis.

The app already allows users to make calls via Whatsapp - which uses the internet to connect the call as opposed to mobile network signal - so this was probably always going to be the next step.

And you can rest assured that you won't find it complicated to work out; you'll be able to tap the video camera icon in the top right-hand corner and it'll open up a video chat that looks exactly like the one you'd recognise from the likes of FaceTime or Skype.

As ​The Verge ​rightly points out, Whatsapp's never been particularly quick off the mark when it comes to developing its products. Initially launching in 2009, it took the tech company two whole years to venture into the realm of group chats (which we sometimes wish they'd never invented, tbh), and four further years to enable voice calls.

So this step into video calling just one year after ​that​ is Usain Bolt-like for them.

And it doesn't do much except serve to remind us that we live in such a lazy society, companies now have to develop their apps to mean we can do everything inside them instead of going to the effort of clicking the home button, scrolling across and selecting a different app from which to carry out a video call.

Oh, the hardship we had before today.
