7 People Reveal the Wildest and Worst Places They've Been Dumped At

Getting dumped sucks. There's no way around it. But some breakups can certainly be gentler than others. There are polite ways to be told someone doesn't want to hang around you anymore, and there are extremely brutal ways — and almost all of those extremely brutal ways involve some sort of public setting. If you've ever found yourself getting dumped over your favourite meal at your favourite restaurant, don't worry! You're not alone. Here are seven short stories from people on the worst places they've ever been dumped.

1. "It was my 21st birthday and my boyfriend at the time wanted to take me to my favourite restaurant in downtown Houston. I got all dressed up, excited to go, and when I got there, he acted completely normal. As I was excitedly ordering my wine and waiting for my favourite pasta, he looked at me and said, 'I just don't see a future with you.' He left me in the restaurant by myself on my birthday with a full plate of uneaten pasta but of course finished all of my wine." —Ashton, 22

2. "I got dumped at a Halloween party in high school. We were doing a couple's costume. We were ironic Twilight, so I was a really sparkly vampire and she was Kristen Stewart. After, she left to go to another guy's party. Not only was I sad, I was sad and sparkly. It taught me a valuable lesson about the perils of couple's costumes, especially one that requires me to buy glitter." —Alex, 25

3. "[I was dumped] by text message after dating for 3 1/2 years, while I was at a benefit dinner supporting victims of human trafficking. I'd been there for maybe two hours and as far as I was concerned, everything was fine. I got a text from him that said, 'Meg, I love you, but I can't do this anymore.' At which point I excused myself and called him from the bathroom. I went back in and went back to the table of ladies, none of whom I had previously known. When one of them noticed I had been crying, she asked if I knew someone who had been a victim of human trafficking and if that's why I was upset. I had to tell her that my tears were for a breakup, it was slightly embarrassing." —Meg, 26

4. "It was the summer I graduated high school, and my boyfriend and I were starring in a production of RENT together as Mark and Maureen. I haemorrhaged my vocal chord, had to give up my part for most of the run, and was only speaking through a little dry erase board. I was still performing in the chorus and mouthing words, and on the night of our final performance, we got into an argument about something very unimportant. Suddenly he was whispering — in case his mic was on — 'We're going to be going to college in a couple months anyway, maybe we should just call it.' Unable to write on my white board fast enough before we had to be on stage, we didn't get to talk about it until the cast party later that night. I confronted him as best I could with my white board and eventually found out that he had cheated on me weeks ago and was feeling guilty." —Hannah, 25

5. "My college boyfriend dumped me at my favourite restaurant that had also become a super-sentimental place for our relationship — it was a 24-hour restaurant, and we used to go there to study and even had a couple of our earliest dates there. I did not see it coming. He picked me up under the guise of having another pancake diner night, then after I had sat down, ordered coffee and food, he dumped me. I proceeded to sob into a plate of pancakes and migas while the entire restaurant stared. I ate the whole thing and didn't go back for two years." —Lauren, 22

6. "I was broken up with at Starbucks in NYC! The awkward part to this breakup story is that we met at one Starbucks location, waited in line and ordered our drinks, only to find out there were no seats available. So then we walked together to another close Starbucks location." —Julia, 20

7. "He was working as a barback, so he came home from work at 4 a.m., got in bed with me, and I snuggled up next to him. He basically was like, 'We need to talk,' then proceeded to break up with me while we were cuddling. We were together over three years. My bed is my favourite place. After that, my bed felt empty and alone. He kind of ruined it for me." —Victoria, 21
