Watching These Galaxy Bowls Being Made Is So Oddly Soothing

When you're handed this towering, psychadelic mashup of a sundae, it's hard to know where to begin. Do you start with a bite of ice cream? Cotton candy? The gummies? Your brain starts to short-circuit before you've even had a chance for the sugar high to set in.

For indecisive eaters, Coney Waffle's galaxy bowls are heavenly. You get to sample a little bit of everything — without getting paralyzed by all of the customization options. The New Jersey-based shop takes care of all of the toppings for you; you just have to decide which flavor ice cream you want. You can use up to three varieties, which range from classics like chocolate and butter pecan to brownie s'mores and blue monster.

Coney Waffle's known for its 24-inch-tall Sideshow Shakes, topped with a Marge Simpson-style beehive of homemade cotton candy, sour gummies, lollipops, chocolate-covered pretzels, ice cream sandwiches, and whole ice cream cones. These sundaes could steal the throne. The waffle bowls are made fresh daily, using swirls of tinted batter to create a psychedelic, otherworldly effect. Then they're topped with just about anything you can imagine.

Like almost everything the shop creates, the galaxy bowls have evolved since they were first dreamed up. Originally, they were just rainbow ice cream cones. Then, they started dabbling in homemade galaxy-colored bowls.

"We keep creating — we keep trying to do cool things," said Lorene Zalick, . "If we're going to make colorful cones, we've got to put stuff on it. We started putting all of our treats on it, and it just grew from there."

Coney Waffle's employees, known as Shake Slayers, are realistic: They know most people can't finish their behemoth treats. That's why they stick to toppings with a longer shelf life — nothing wet, sticky or drippy, like caramel sauce, fudge, or whipped cream — that you can bag up and enjoy later.

There's a science to creating these gravity-defying desserts. It's born out of necessity, given the employees make up to 200 of these massive treats a day across their three locations. The best part, by far, is the reactions on children's faces.

"You see little kids come in, and they're like, 'This was on my summer bucket list. I had to go here. I had to try this,'" explained Zalick. "It's like they're on an amusement ride — that's how pumped they are."

And that's before they've even had a bite.
