Bollywood movies are buried deep in controversies every time its makers try to take a bold step and get out of the audience's comfort zone. Controversy is a double edged sword. See how these movies landed in a soup
1. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
In the wake of Uri attack, Cinema Owners Exhibitors Association of India (COEAI) decided not to release any movie in which a Pakistani actor had worked. Unfortunately, this happened right before the release of Karan Johar's movie, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which starred Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. The fate of the movie was in dark for a very long time. The director had to deal with threats from political groups. He finally broke his silence and issue a video statement to clarify his stand on the issue. The movie saw the day of light after a lot of ruckus.
2. The Dirty Picture
The film was loosely based on the life of south Indian actor Silk Smitha. The character's uninhibited expression of sexuality was enough to raise eyebrows. But what started the real trouble was the film's poster. Silk's brothers had a problem with that and sent a notice to the makers of the movie.
Mallika Sherawat and controversies go hand in hand, especially around every film release. She was all over the news for her debut movie as it has 17 kisses. Yup, someone counted it!
The controversy began when people noticed that a few scenes from the movie 'Barfi' were eerily similar to scenes from Charlie Chaplin's movies. It seemed like the way to pay homage went terribly wrong.
This movie united all religious groups. Not by love, but by being against this movie that highlighted the superstition practiced by every religion. The movie had to bear the wrath of religious group but it did well after the release.
The plot revolved around love blooming between a sixty year old man and his teenage daughter's friend. A particular political party thought it was against the Indian values. The movie released but it was banned in Allahabad.
7. Udta Punjab
The subject of the movie became its own problem. The movie was focused on the excessive use of drugs in the state of Punjab. The censor board wanted to cut a lot of important scenes as the language was not appropriate and the makers didn't agree to it. Sadly, the movie was also leaked before its release.
8. Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela
Since the title of the movie had the name Ram, which is based on a Hindu mythology, the sentiments of the religion followers were said to be hurt. An FIR was filed against the actors and director as well.
The bare back in the movie's poster was the beginning of trouble. A political party had sent a saree to Kareena. Eek!
