Here's Exactly How to Get Shay Mitchell's Signature Smoky Eye

Sometimes you can look at a smoky eye and think, It's pretty, but I wouldn't be able to wear it. But have you met Shay Mitchell's smoky eye? It's sexy, not too sultry, and doable enough for anyone. Makeup artist Patrick Ta, who tends to Shay as well as Gigi Hadid and Kim Kardashian, shows you exactly how to nail the Pretty Little Liars star's signature eye look. Now you too can look like a bombshell 24/7.

1. Prime your eyes. Ta had his model, stylist (and Shay doppelgänger) Rebecca Alainaz, prime her eyes with a clean fingertip coated in MAC Cosmetic's Pro Long Wear Paint Pot in "Painterly," which is a creamy taupe shade. This lays down an even-colored canvas and keeps the smoky shadows from budging.

2. Swipe on a crease color. Take a fluffy tapered eye shadow brush and, with your eyes open, apply a soft, matte brown shadow into the crease of your eye using a windshield wiper-like motion. (Ta's go-to shadow is Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Shadow Single in "Fawn.") He adds, "Once you feel like most of the product is off the brush and onto your crease, blend the remaining shadow on the brush up into the brow so there are no harsh lines."

3. Add depth to the outer corner of your eye. Using your fluffy brush again, twirl it over a dark brown shadow (Ta uses Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Shadow in "Deep Chocolate Brown,") and run the shade along the crease of your eye, intensifying it at the outer corner for added drama. Ta notes this will make a cut crease.

4. Spice up your smoky eye. Ta had Rebecca apply a bronze shadow (Nars Duo Eye Shadow in "Isolade") to the center of her lids using a flat eye shadow brush, like Smith Cosmetics Small Laydown Eye Shadow Brush. Don't forget to blend the center shade out seamlessly toward the inner and outer corners, so there aren't any sharp lines.

5. Play up your lower lash line. Ta suggests applying a dark brown shimmery shadow along your lower lash line (he uses his favorite Nars Single Eye Shadow in "Galapagos" on Shay) before tracing your waterline with a brown long-wearing liner.

6. Smudge out the color on your lower lash line to make it less intense. Rebecca used MAC Cosmetic's #219 Pencil Brush. Finally, top your upper and lower lashes with mascara.

And voilà, you've got a smoky eye you can wear anywhere — day or night!
