Kylie Jenner Swears by Coconut Oil for Whitening Your Teeth

In Kylie Jenner's new beauty tips video on her app, she gives a little more insight into her fascinating beauty routine.

While some of the tips are not too surprising (get enough sleep, drink water, wear sunscreen), she does mention one unusual trick: an inexpensive way to get a super-white smile, which almost seems too good to be true.

"Coconut oil is a natural extract for white teeth," Kylie says. She suggests it as a cheaper alternative to teeth whitening, after divulging that she visits the dentist to whiten hers.

However, New York cosmetic dentist Marc Lowenberg says that although oil pulling (the act of swishing oil in your mouth for up to 20 minutes) might have its benefits, whitening isn't one of them.

"Results of oil pulling include fresher breath, brighter teeth and reduction of bleeding gums while flossing," Dr. Lowenberg says. "It is important to note, that oil pulling does not take the place of brushing and flossing, and I suggest using a tongue scraper after swishing with the oil for 20 minutes to remove the oil from the surface of the tongue. The proof of efficacy of this treatment is something you can see and feel after several days of this treatment. I wouldn't suggest this for whitening teeth."

Kylie also includes a point about keeping your nails in good shape. "Maintain your nails, ladies," she says. "My mom always taught me this growing up because a man always looks at a woman's nails. Yeah, just get them done."

But as demonstrated by Kylie on Instagram, don't let a chipped nail stop you from taking selfies. Life must go on.

And contrary to her sister Kim's advice about sleeping in your makeup, Kylie urges her viewers to do the opposite at the end of the video.

"Wash your face every night and get all your makeup off. And don't forget 'cause it's really bad to sleep in makeup."

Amen, sista.
