Weird Light in California Sky Had Everyone Convinced the Aliens Are Coming

I'm sorry if I seem a little distracted while blogging right now, it's because I'm busy packing up my belongings because the aliens are coming to take us away. That's the rational obvious explanation for a mystery light in the skies of Southern California that drove people wild with speculation on Saturday night. 

In case you missed it, because you were out partying at some wild exclusive celebrity event (aka watching ​Gilmore Girls ​on Netflix with your cat), the excitement started Saturday night, when local residents spotted a mysterious colored light bursting through the sky.

ABC reportsreports the lights prompted calls to local police, as people tried to figure out what the heck was going on. Meanwhile, on Twitter, people already ​knew. ​The aliens were taking over the Earth and there was but one thing to do. Have a kickass welcoming party:

But as CNN reports, ​booooo, ​it was just some military exercise and not our alien overlords ​coming to take us to their galaxy (or a lame viral marketing stunt for the rebooted ​X-Files ​series). According to a statement from the Pentagon, the lights were just "​part of a scheduled, ongoing system evaluation test."  The test was just a ​ballistic missile submarine​ firing off one of its missiles. 

"Launches are conducted on a frequent, recurring basis to ensure the continued reliability of the system. Each test activity provides valuable information about our systems, thus contributing to assurance in our capabilities."​
