We're taking Lily-Rose Depp's new Love magazine cover as confirmation; blue is officially THE trend of 2016. Well, in makeup anyway.

From jean navy to metallic azure and cobalt blue the hue has made its way all over the A-lister's faces setting the colour code for this year.

Obviously the look on Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp's daughter is a bit beauty-bonkers. The blue gives way to yellow and orange which all clash spectacularly with her pink lips and cheeks – but the 80s theme is just one take on the blue makeup trend.

Gwen Stafani's demonstration of sleek sapphire flicks is a particular fave. Paired with feline lashes it makes your average cat eye much more interesting.

Lupita Nyong'o regularly rocks bright blue eye makeup which pops beautifully against her skin tone, but she pushed the boundaries recently for a Star Wars premiere look with galactic metallic blue lips. The shade was created with eye shadow and lip balm (no need to dig out your blue lippy from the 90s) and looked incredible with a smoky eye:

Another look we love is inky blue eye shadow with black liner and lashes – as Jessica Alba demoes in this video below. A simple sweep of indigo across the eyelids (stopping at the crease) is an easy ticket into the trend that feels thoroughly modern. Watch and learn:
