Red Wine Has ANOTHER Health Benefit We Never Knew About

It was only recently that we found out that wine could act as an antidepressant but now it seems that there's another benefit and it relates to the age of our brain.

Dr Preston Estep, Director of gerontology at the Harvard Personal Genome Project says that though between 20 and 30 % of our life expectancy is down to the gene lottery, what we put in our bodies can help manage hereditary factors.

In an article for the Daily Mail he explains how after studying the 'Mindspan Elite' - i.e. those who live the longest while also maintaining levels of alertness usually attributed to younger people - he found that the key to combating dementia is actually in our diets.

'These 'Mindspan Elite' can be found among communities in Mediterranean France, Italy, Spain, and Japan,' Dr Estep explains, 'They may be separated geographically and culturally, and their way of eating might be diverse, but it shares many common factors.'

Though there are the usual healthy inclusions you would expect, lots of vegetables and a reduction in sugar filled foods, there's also some you wouldn't.

It turns out that red wine plays a 'significant role' in helping our minds stay active, as well as other fermented foods such as vinegar and pickles, while he recommends avoiding foods high in iron.

The Mindspan Diet that Dr Estep has devised based on his findings also encourages swapping brown carbs for their white alternatives: 'The Mindspan Elite have a diet rich in 'white' carbohydrates such as bread, pasta and white rice.'

Well, if it comes doctor recommended...
