This is the Healthiest Time of Day to Go for a Number Two

Yes, apparently, there is a correct time of day to do a number two.

Taking into account that everyone's toilet routines and habits are different (anything from three times a day to once a week is considered normal), there is a time of day that's better for us to take a trip to the bathroom with our favorite book.

Apparently, this time is in the morning — more specifically, within 30 minutes of waking up.

This is because our small intestines and colon are busy processing the food we ate the day before while we are asleep.

Then, once we are up and about, our bowels are ready to release yesterday's waste.

If this does not apply to you and you struggle with irregular bowel movements, there are certain things you can do to encourage your bowel clock to get back on track. We asked NetDoctor's GP Roger Henderson to share his advice:

1. Try to keep your eating habits and sleeping pattern regular — this, in turn, will help your bowel movements align.

2. Make sure your diet includes enough fibre, fruits, and vegetables.

3. Ensure regular exercise to get things moving.

4. Stay well hydrated.

5. Avoiding highly processed foods.

6. You must also make sure you go to the toilet when you actually need to, as holding it in can put you at risk of damaging your colon and throw your clock out of sync. So make sure you allow enough time to relax and relieve yourself when your body tells you it needs to.
