So People Are Naming Their Babies for Pokémon Now

Babycenter, a parenting site that tracks the popularity of baby names, told BuzzFeed there's been a spike in Pokémon-ish names since the release of the game earlier this month. So weird, right? Of course not! It's 2016 and you can name your child Drowzee if you want to, dammit.

One of the biggest spikes they've seen this year has been Eevee, which is classified as a girl's name on the site. The name moved up 1,343 spots on the list from last year, making it the 2,910th most popular thing to name your baby girl this year.

Another gigantic jump was Onyx. For girls, the name moved up 2,173 places. For boys (spelled Onix, like the Pokémon itself), the name is 4,400 places up to spot no. 4,400 — it wasn't logged at all last year apparently.

BuzzFeed notes Star (like Staryu) and Ivy (like Ivysaur) also saw big bumps. Contrastingly, Staryu and Ivysaur were listed as nonexistent on the site. Other Poké names of note that saw zero percent increases? Pikachu, Charmander, and Squirtle.

But that's good news, really! If you love your child, you'll name her after an augmented reality fad so she can go viral for being the First Teen Who Was Named After Pokémon and Lived to Tell the Tale when she grows up. Or you can do a combined viral piece: I Named My Baby After Pokémon So You Don't Have To. Whichever you guys prefer.
