A Mother Put Her One-Month-Old Baby Up for Sale on Ebay

A mother has attempted to sell her one-month-old baby daughter on the auction site Ebay, it's been reported.

Alongside several photos of the young child was the post's title, which read: 'Child, 40 days old named Maria for sale' and an asking price of 5,000 euros (which is roughly £4,500). The child was apparently born in the German city of Duisburg.

Within moments of it being uploaded, the post began to draw widespread attention, with internet users expressing concern for the safety of the child. Within half an hour, the listing was taken down.

Spokesperson for eBay, Pierre Du Bois, said the website had informed the police of the advert after a barrage of complaints from customers.

"We received a lot of complaints from users and we immediately pursued the matter," he said. "In such a case, we provide the authorities with all available information."

He also explained the company's process after hoax or concerning listings are added to the site. "We immediately ban these providers. We have specially trained teams which keep track on such cases and quickly react."

Police have confirmed that they are investigating the matter, describing the suspect parents as "refugees" who have been taken in for questioning on suspicion of human trafficking following a raid of their apartment where authorities gathered potentially incriminating evidence from their internet history.
