17 Guys Reveal What They Wish They Knew Before Getting Married

1. "My now-wife and I lived together before we got married, so I don't think there were too many surprises after we got married. I guess the only thing is that I wish I knew more about consolidating bills and stuff. Like ... not that any of these things would make you call off the wedding ... but ... know each other's credit scores. Know your accident history for your car insurance. Know your tax stuff. Figure out who has the better health insurance. I had gotten into a car accident a few years ago but wasn't driving anymore. My wife was p*ssed when she found out her premiums went up." —Curt, 28

2. "I was really surprised that my wife stopped bothering to close the door when she sh*t." —Jay, 29

3. "You're going to get three toasters at your wedding. No matter what you do. No matter how soon it's off the registry ... you'll get three toasters. And you won't even bother returning two because you'll be too busy. You'll just have these three toasters. And then one day, the toaster you're using will break, and you'll be like, 'It's cool.'" —Tim, 28

4. "There was a lot of stuff I did on a normal basis that my wife found annoying that I didn't realize until we lived together and got married. Like leaving the toilet seat up, or putting my shirts on my computer chair instead of hanging them in the closet, or leaving my beer glass on the coffee table when I went to sleep, or not rolling down the bag of cereal inside the cereal box, or missing hairs on the sink when I shaved, or not cleaning pee off the toilet seat..." —Mike, 30

5. "There's one thing I really wish I knew, and it's something I try to tell everyone I know getting married: Make sure you schedule some time just for yourselves. Take a limo ride on your own from the ceremony to the reception. Go to your hotel room for five minutes during cocktail hour. Sneak off after taking photos with the wedding party. Everyone tells you just how insane the wedding day is, but I think you're still not prepared for how many directions you get pulled in. You'll appreciate getting to spend some time together." —Andy, 28

6. "In this day and age, it doesn't seem like much changes. I think lots of people live together first. I guess that's the big thing ... I wish I knew it wouldn't feel any different. It's like turning 26. That didn't feel much different from being 25." —Anthony, 28

7. "Don't give someone a plus-one just because they beg for it. You are not obligated to invite some stranger to your wedding just because your friend doesn't want to come alone. They could get way too drunk and embarrass themselves. I'll leave it at that." —Thomas, 28

8. "Don't take for granted that your wife is changing her last name. Have that conversation beforehand, not four months after you get married and she still has her maiden name. It wasn't a huge deal to me, but I guess I'm pretty traditional and just assumed that'd be the case. It wasn't." —Matt, 27

9. "Nothing life-changing but I think having a joint bank account before the wedding is definitely helpful. On that same note, getting on the same page beforehand about costs for the wedding, because it'll likely be a lot of money and you don't want it to turn in to a disagreement. Also, don't plan on getting much done the week or two after the wedding/honeymoon because your motivation to be productive will be drained by then." —Ben, 31

10. "There is definitely the possibility of short period of depression right after the wedding, which makes sense psychologically. After going full speed into the big day, having it go by quickly, then reflecting on it can make you feel sad that it's over, or upset that something didn't go the exact way you wanted or that you missed something. My wife definitely was in crappy mood for, like, three days after we got back, but being mindful of the day as a whole and the future ahead definitely helps." —Zack, 28

11. "Trying to balance time with both sides of the family, especially with holidays, is tough. One side complains you spend more time with the other." —Patrick, 29

12. "We kinda let the wedding take all of our attention and just kind of glossed over the honeymoon. I would've booked a nice resort that would've pampered more if I could do it over." —Eric, 26

13. "I wish I knew to drink much less at the reception. I don't remember a lot of it and it went by too quickly." —Adam, 28

14." I should've planned to finish all my extra work projects by one month before the wedding instead of one week before." —Jason, 29

15. "I wish I had learned how to do a sick frontside 360 kickflip before I got married." —Will, 27

16. "I should've gotten a better haircut." —Justin, 28

17. "I didn't know you could get free things for being newlyweds. Everyone tells me about getting free drinks, appetizers, plane upgrades, hotel room upgrades. We didn't even get ONE SINGLE FREE DRINK or ANYTHING!" —Brandon, 30
