There are many things on Facebook that we wish
were illegal - cringe 'my boyfriend is a cutie' statuses, your mum
commenting on all of your posts, the ignorant political rants, the
hashtag blessed - but a court has ruled that the 'find a friend' feature
is actually illegal.
court, the Federal Court of Justice, found that the tool which
sends emails inviting people's friends to join Facebook is technically
illegal. With this feature users grant Facebook permission to access
contacts in their address book, which (to use Lauren Conrad's favourite
word) they think is shady.
court ruled that this was a 'deceptive marketing practice': "Invitation
emails from Facebook to people who have not clearly consented to
receiving them are an unacceptable nuisance."
A spokesperson for Facebook in Germany said: "We will study it carefully to assess any impact on our services today."
Now here's our real question - surely there can't be that many people that haven't joined Facebook left to email?
