There's a Correct Way To Make Tea And THIS is It

Finally, the milk before/after debate is settled.

There's a Correct Way To Make Tea And THIS is It

A cup of tea solves everything, right? But with great things comes great responsibility, like the responsibility of making that cup of tea CORRECTLY.

And exactly how this is done has been a historical point of contention: do you put the milk in before or after the hot water? I won't lie, there's pros and cons for both. By putting the milk in first, you can ensure you pour in roughly the same measurement each time, and we don't like change, so that's great.

Pouring the milk in after, however, means you can judge the cuppa by colour, stopping when it's just the right shade of envelope brown (or whatever floats your boat).

But just so you know, there is actually a RIGHT way of doing it, according to a Tetley tea blender, Sebastian Michaelis, who has genuinely had his tastebuds insured for £1 million ( INR 95 crores approx). So we're not going to argue with the bloke.

Speaking to Time Out, Michaelis confirmed that pouring in the milk in after the hot water was indeed the correct formula when it comes to the science of a cuppa. Because if you're one of those weirdos who dives in milk-first, you "will reduce the water temperature and inhibit the brewing". And nobody wants to inhibit the brewing, now, do they?

And Postcard Teas owner, Tim d'Offay, also put his penny's worth into the matter, siding with Michaelis on this one. "You can control the strength of the tea much more easily this way," he adds.

So there we have it. The tea men have spoken. And if we ever catch you trying to pour milk in first, you'll be landed with a GO TO JAIL card, do not pass go. Got it?
