9 Things You Never Knew About Models

Modelling. It sounds like the dream, doesn't it? See a model and you think of the endless stream of photo shoots, couture gowns, big money and self assurance that must make up their life.

But there's much more to the business than stereotypes would have you believe, which is why we've uncovered the nine things you never knew about being a professional model. From worrying about the very same lumps and bumps we all fret over, to working for free, prepare for a lesson in what it takes to look good for a living...

1. Their Lives Aren't Always Glamorous

There might be the occasional after-party and you get to wear some beautiful garments, but the life of a model isn't all having your hair done and mingling with fashion-y types. In fact, some parts of a photo shoot are outright unglamorous. Think, slipping on couture in the loos, posing in swimsuits in the minus temps and holding THE most painful positions. What troopers.

2. They Aren't Always Paid For Shoots

It's a common misconception that models rake in mega bucks for looking good, but unless you land a top ad campaign, that isn't always the case. New models building up experience often do photo shoots for free, or may be compensated for their posing with pictures or, if they're lucky, clothes.

3. They Deal With Dandruff, Too

Think about it: models' hair is scraped back, gelled down, drenched in hairspray and ravaged with heated tools almost daily, so their lengths and scalps are bound to suffer. More than half admit to feeling self-conscious about scalp issues and dandruff. In fact, dandruff is a bigger complaint amongst models than dry tresses, lack of volume and split ends.

4. They Love A Budget Beauty Buy

Who doesn't love a good bargain? Three out of five models admit they rely more on drugstore beauty buys than the fancy stuff on premium counters.

5. They Worry About Spots, Cellulite And Stretch Marks

So, it turns out that models aren't superhumans immune to lumps and bumps after all. (Duh.) More than half of them worry about cellulite, stretch marks and acne respectively - just like the rest of us. Now, if that doesn't prove that we all need to chill about our perceived 'flaws', accept that everyone has them, and see that we're all beautiful, we just don't know what will.

6. They Aren't At Photo Shoots Every Day

The life of a model isn't quite an endless whirlwind of shoots and fashion shows. In the early days of their career, there can be a lot of castings, a lot of waiting around for the verdict, and a lot of rejection before the right job comes along.

7. They Can Be Any Age

If you think you might have missed the modeling boat because you're no longer a teenager, you'll be glad to hear that models can start their career at any age. There are so many different types of modeling, and agencies that cater to each one, so never worry that it's too late. The opportunities are out there.

8. They Don't Work 9-5

In fact, if you're a model, 'normal' working hours rarely exist. Anything, from 3am call times to 12 hours of work on a Sunday are fair game if the perfect shot is at stake. Throw in the admin and organisation on top of each photo shoot, and you'll realise just how hard models work to climb their way to the top.

9. They Are Experts In The Art Of Packing

If you need advice on getting ready for a holiday fast, any model can help you out. They'll often get booked for photo shoots and have to fly out that very same day, so honing speedy suitcase packing skills is just part and parcel of the job. Oh, to be jetting off on last-minute, exotic trips on the regular.
