Do you often get up during the night to go to the toilet? If so, you'll know that it's very annoying. Not only does it wake you from your warm cocoon of slumber, but it might also disturb your partner and you run the risk of not being able to get back to sleep once you've returned.
This condition is called nocturia, but what causes it and how can you avoid it? We spoke to the guys over at NetDoctor to bring you everything you need to know.
Nocturia is the need to go to the toilet during the night and becomes more common as we age. It is also more common in older men, in whom it's often caused by an enlarged prostate.
1. Stop drinking fluids earlier in the day so you can empty your bladder before you go to bed. Don't drink less throughout the day, though: Just start taking on fluids earlier.
2. Start a drink diary and note down when and what you drink for a week to highlight any patterns.
3. Swap to decaffeinated hot drinks.
4. If you are worried that another health issue is causing nocturia, such as a urinary infection or diabetes, visit your GP.
