This Is What Happened When A Woman Returned A Library Book 67 Years Late

Nothing strikes up that feeling of fear quite like returning a library book late – just think of that librarian's stern face. But librarian Zoe Cornelius, who works at Auckland library in New Zealand, was taken off guard when one woman returned a book 67 years after it was due back. The book, Myths and Legends of Maoriland by AW Reed, was checked out of Auckland library in 1948.

It had racked up a fine of  £11,755 (approx. INR 11 lakh) – but (very) luckily for the woman, Zoe didn't enforce the charge as the reader was a child she borrowed the book.

Zoe said, 'She told me she had checked out the book as a child and been meaning to return it for years.'She seemed a bit embarrassed but I was pleased because she said she had read and enjoyed the book many times over the decades and that made me happy – that the book had been in a good home and loved.'
