A New Study Shows Alcohol CAN Make You Happy — In The Short-Term At Least

We're all guilty of guzzling a glass or two of Pinot Grigios on a Friday night, and whilst we're certainly not condoning an all-consuming alcohol diet — that would be ridiculous — you'll be pleased to know a new study has found that people are actually happier when they drink alcohol. Tell us something we don't know.

But there is actual scientific proof that a glass or two will transport your mind to a happy place, with most people experiencing a momentary rush of euphoria whilst supping on their favourite alcoholic tipple.

Sounds good right? But of course, as with anything, there's a limit to how much we can drink before that happiness quickly turns into dissatisfaction, and how indulging in one too many can induce a very swift change in behaviour. Embarrassing drunken tumbles on the dance floor rapidly spring to mind.

But it's not just the embarrassing anecdotes you have to worry about, when you drink a little too much - or for prolonged periods of time - this will run the risk of causing you a great deal of unhappiness, as well as the risk of developing alcohol addiction. It's a fine line people.

Dr Ben Baumberg Geiger, of Kent University, and Dr George MacKerron, of the University of Sussex, conducted the study using an iPhone-based app as well as traditional research methods to gather their findings.

The study aimed to measure how people's happiness and drinking change alongside each other over a period of time.

They found that in the short term, people drinking did feel happier, but it was difficult concede if this was absolutely due to the alcohol or down to the participants' predisposition — they could have been happy to start with.

There was no correlation with long-term happiness, with the study suggesting that drinking too much would in fact lead to feelings of depression and low self-worth.

They found that those who developed drinking problems were found to be less satisfied with life, and more susceptible to developing alcoholism than those who felt generally content. Note to self: if you're feeling blue, your favourite tipple won't do you any favours.

But if you're already on the up and feeling high on life, then a modest glass or two will scientifically make you even happier. Now pass us that Pinot!
