How to Stop The Rain From Ruining Your Hair

Rain is the enemy of our hair, with frizz and flat roots the main bugbears post-downpour. So how can you stop the rain from making your hair look as miserable as the weather forecast? We caught up with top hairdressers to find out…

Blow-dry the smart way

'Take control of your hair, before it takes control of you. If you've got hair that's prone to frizz and you're dreading British Summertime for its confusing mix of humidity and showers, then be sure to prepare your hair in the morning. Lock down the cuticle by aiming your hairdryer down the hair shaft, and be sure that your roots are completely dry before you brave the weather (especially if you struggle with flat roots)' - Karine Jackson, former London hairdresser of the year

Use a serum

'I'd recommend using a weightless serum before blow-drying to keep the hair as smooth as possible, whatever gets thrown at it' – Rae Palmer, director at WeLove Salons

Get to the root of it

'My top trick for lasting volume is to spray in a bit of gel into damp roots, then ruffle them thoroughly with your fingers as your dry the hair. This "confuses" the roots making the hair follicle stand up and giving great volume. Style into your desired shape, then whenever your hair feels a bit flat during the day, or if you've been caught out without an umbrella, give the roots another ruffle with your fingers (wait until it's dry). Just like muscle memory, the roots will remember to stand up straight again, reawakening the volume' – Karine

Style it out

'If you have long hair, then on days when rain is forecast start out with a style that will withstand a soaking - a ponytail, bun or other hair-up will still look fine if it gets wet. Smooth it into shape in the morning with a serum to repel moisture and keep it sleek. If you're prone to frizzy bits, use slides and grips to keep them in place so they can't escape from the style.' – Jamie Stevens, celebrity hairdresser

Pick up a powder

'Carry a volume-boosting product with you in your bag; sprinkle it into your roots if you get caught in a downpour and as it dries you'll be left with amazing volume' - Rae

Consider a long-term solution

'If you have an ongoing problem with frizzy hair and your dream hair is sleek and smooth, it 's worth considering a Kerastraight treatment. This will banish frizz altogether for up to 4 months so no need to fear the rain or humidity, and it really cuts down styling time in the moning as well' - Jamie
