This Doctor Delivered a Baby LITERALLY Right Before Giving Birth to Her Own

Even though she was moments away from being induced, an obstetrician put her own labor on hold to help another woman deliver her baby safely last week in Kentucky.

Dr. Amanda Hess was preparing to give birth to her second child at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center when she overheard a woman in active labor needed help because her baby was in distress, according to a Facebook post by Dr. Hala Sabry, of the nonprofit Physician Moms Group.

While Hess had examined Leah Halliday Johnson "three or four times" during her pregnancy, she wasn't her main doctor at Women's Care of the Blue Grass, where Hess practices, according to NBC News.

Halliday Johnson's ob-gyn was on the way to the hospital, but Hess knew that the baby needed immediate attention. so she "put another gown on to cover my backside, put some splash boots on over my flip flops," and delivered the baby, according to the Facebook post.

Hess was so professional throughout the entire delivery, Halliday Johnson says she never even noticed that Hess was about to give birth herself. "She was definitely in doctor mode," Halliday Johnson told NBC. "My husband noticed something was going on because she had on a hospital gown, but I didn't notice that because I was on the delivery table. I was in my own world there."

"I appreciate what she did for my family, and it speaks a lot to who she is as a woman and a mother as well as a doctor," Halliday Johnson continued. "It makes you feel better, bringing a baby girl into the world, knowing there are women like her willing to step up like that."

Hess's contractions began just a few minutes after she delivered Halliday Johnson's baby. "I had actually taken a call the day before, so I thought really that I was working up to the last minute. But this was literally 'til the last second," Hess told NBC News affiliate WLEX-18. (Hess also gave birth to a daughter, Ellen Joyce.)

"Delivering other peoples' babies is something I do every day," Hess told NBC. "And I'm more comfortable with delivering someone else's baby than my own, for sure."
