Why is Everyone Wearing Capes on the Golden Globes Red Carpet?

Capes are a big trend on the red carpet at this year's Golden Globes, which is super weird because, well, they're capes. Don't get me wrong. Capes can be totally amazing on the red carpet. Remember Lupita Nyong'o's red Ralph Lauren cape dress from the Golden Globes in 2014? Stunning!

Of course, part of what made Lupita's cape so amazing that year was how unique it was. No one else was going full-on cape in 2014. No one.

Fast forward two years and the Golden Globes red carpet has no fewer than five capes. Five!

Viola Davis's dress came with a sheer, sparkly, low-back mini cape.

J.Lo's look also included a mini cape, this time in emoji yellow to match her dress.

Emilia Clarke went for a more dramatic cape look in sheer black down to the floor.

Taraji P Henson also went long with a white cape trailing behind her white strapless gown.

And, in what was perhaps the most cape-y look of the night, Regina King's metallic sequined dress came with a contrasting long white cape flowing out behind her.

You just know each of their stylists was like, "this is going to be such an original statement."

Yeah. Not so much.
