Take A Peek Inside The Most Dangerous Garden On Earth

Some people grow herbs. The Duchess of Northumberland? She prefers something a bit stronger.

Tucked behind big black gates on the grounds of the old Alnwick Castle in England is The Poison Garden, a collection of 100 lethal plants, ranging from cyanide-producing bushes to phototoxic stems that will burn your skin.

Earlier this month, Great Big Story took a tour of the site with head gardener Trevor Jones.

"We have to obviously maintain the garden, so we have to tend the plants, and when we do that, we have to be very careful of the way we operate," he explained, while very casually walking amongst legendary killers like hemlock and deadly nightshade. "So we have to cover some of our skin when we deal with particularly dangerous plants."

Surprisingly, many of these species aren't contained by fences and aren't marked by menacing signs that read "These plants can kill."

"They're very very common plants," said Jones. "In fact a lot of them are what we'd call cottage garden plants, and they're grown in many people's' gardens, but people don't know how harmful they actually are."

Watch the full video below, and if you want to get up close and personal with the plants, the estate offers free guided tours every 10-15 minutes at The Alnwick Garden.
