Layer 1— Essence

These liquids replenish the skin after cleansing, says Jenna Walsh, a skin therapist at Heyday LA. (Think of them as the refreshing ice in your drink.) Saturate a cotton pad with one that has hydrating ingredients such as ceramides or rose water (like Garnier’s), then pat it all over your face.

Layer 2— Serum

Layer 3 — Cream

This step is the hydrating cherry on top. “Oils can penetrate creams, but not vice versa, so they go on last,” says Cetaphil dermatologist Yoon-Soo Cindy Bae, MD, a clinical assistant professor at NYU Dermatology. And oils are packed with lipids, which act as a barrier to lock in moisture.
