Another Actress Said She Was Underpaid and You'll Never Believe Who it Was
Hint: she's been nominated for an Academy Award five times!
We've been talking about it for a while now. The fact that women are not paid as much as their male co-stars in Hollywood (and Bollywood) is a fight that's been going on for months now.
Jennifer Lawrence put the issue on the map when she wrote an opinion piece for Lena Dunham's newsletter Lenny where she spoke about the gender pay gap. And of course, cited the fact that she was paid lesser than her male co-stars in the film American Hustle.
And now, Amy Adams is riding the train too. In a recent interview with British GQ, the actress spoke about how she knew she was being paid less and she had to make a choice, whether to do the film or not.
Now, let's put this in perspective, shall we? There were five actors in that film—Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, and Jeremy Renner.
Jennifer Lawrence has won 78 awards in her life, one of which was an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film Silver Linings Playbook. She's been nominated four times for an Academy Award by the way.
Amy Adams has won close to 44 awards in her career, and has been nominated five times for an Academy Award.
Christian Bale has won 58 awards in his life, has been nominated thrice for an Academy Award, and won it once for his role in The Fighter.
Bradley Cooper has won 21 awards in his life, and has been nominated four times for an Academy Award. He's never won one, though.
And finally, Jeremy Renner has won 52 awards in his life, and been nominated for an Academy Award twice. He's also never won an Academy, though.
That's the math. Now, if we were to assume that winning an Academy Award, even being nominated, is an indication of your worth as an actor, then the two most worthy actors in this list are Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams. Huh?
And yet, there were the least paid actors in the film.
And that's Hollywood, imagine the state in Bollywood. Anushka Sharma spoke about the ridiculous benefits that male actors received on set during an interview with Anupama Chopra, and the fact is that the disparity exists.
Jennifer Lawrence spoke up, Amy Adams has spoken up, and Anushka Sharma has too. It's about time that more and more women started asking for their due.
And let's hope that male co-stars hop on the train too.
