Where Drogon and Daenerys Likely Flew After the ‘Game of Thrones’ Finale
- The Game of Thrones season 8 finale just aired, and despite a water bottle mishap, a bunch of livid fans, and spoilers that leaked pre-episode, it was fine, I guess.
- But it left an important Q: Where did the dragon take Dany?
Spoilers ahead, so if you haven’t seen the finale, what are you doing here, friend?? Alright, regardless of how strongly you disliked the Game of Thrones finale, I think we can all agree that Drogon crying over his mom Daenerys’ body was completely heart-shattering. The dragon took that major “Simba sobbing over Mufasa’s body” energy and peaced out, but it was pretty unclear where he went. Before Drogon flew off, we saw him find his mama dead, destroy the Iron Throne in a fit of grief, and cry :(. Obviously, Dany died (thanks a lot, Jon Snow), but there didn’t really seem to be a game plan after that. Even though Drogon flying away was the very last time we saw a dragon on the show, there was a subtle clue later on about what happened to him. After Drogon flew off, King Bran the Broken was at a table with his advisers, and someone mentioned offhand that Drogon was spotted flying east. That’s about as specific as the show gets about the dragon’s location, but there’s a good chance he was taking Dany to Essos, an eastern location that’s the home and birthplace of the Targaryen line. This is how a Game of Thrones Wiki page about dragons describes it:
Five thousand years ago, men of the Valyrian Freehold learned how to master and ride dragons as beasts of war and used them to forge an empire that stretched across most of the continent of Essos, dominating almost half of the Known World. Four hundred years before the War of the Five Kings, the entire Valyrian empire and almost all of its dragons were destroyed in a single day, during a cataclysmic volcanic eruption known as the Doom of Valyria. One Valyrian noble family, the Targaryens, survived the Doom on the distant island outpost of Dragonstone in the Narrow Sea—along with the last surviving Valyrian dragons.Sooooo, Drogon is probably bringing Dany’s body back to be with her ancestors. It’s left uncertain whether he’ll be successful in doing this, since Bran basically said he’s going to try to find the dragon himself, but let’s all hope Drogon succeeds. The poor dragon deserves it.
