TIME TO BUST SOME MYTHS

Inputs by Adam Boulding, Scientific Communications Manager, Gillette Venus

Adam addresses some burning queries about shaving.

MYTH: Shaving makes hair grow darker and thicker.
AB: “Not at all! We’ve conducted extensive research, and shaving does not affect hair growth or texture. It may simply change the way hair initially feels, because the tip of re-growing hairs has changed.”

MYTH: Pressing hard will give a closer shave.

AB: “Quite the contrary—putting too much pressure on your razor can cause nicks and cuts. Keep blades flat against your skin so the razor can do its job.”

MYTH: Shaving over the
same area repeatedly gives
a closer shave.
AB: “It will irritate skin. If
you’re having trouble with
rough spots, it may be time
to change your blade.”

MYTH: Shaving every day is bad for the skin.

AB: “No. If you have fast-growing, thick hair, you can shave everyday. Plus, shaving with a razor actually helps skin look and feel smoother by exfoliating the top
layer of dead skin cells.”

Cosmo: So how is the new Gillette Venus Breeze different from the older version?
Adam Boulding: “The biggest innovation in this razor is the moisture-shave bars. The experts at Gillette Venus collaborated with the skincare experts at Olay to come up with this unique invention.”

C: How many years did it take to create Venus Breeze?

AB: “Many. We’ve been inventing razors for over a 100 years, and every time we invent the future, we build on all the innovations of the past.

The first prototype can be done very quickly, but the final product can take close to a decade before it’s launched—it involves hundreds of scientists around the world testing the prototype on consumers.”

C: Being a man, how difficult is it to develop a product for women?
AB: “I think this is where a ‘scientific brain’ really helps. I have worked with many female scientists—we share our research, collaborate and invent together. I also find our approach of having daily research panels—with women

coming in to use our products, and giving feedback—quite insightful.”

C: Anything one should keep
in mind while shaving?
AB: “Soaking in a warm bath or shower for two to three minutes, softens hair and causes it to expand, so it’s 60% easier to cut. And always shave with a fresh blade—it provides a closer and smoother shave, and helps prevent cuts... And finally, replace blades at the first sign of discomfort— on average, one should change the blades after 10 shaves.”
