5 Derm-Approved Hair Masks to Try Out Now

Missing your regular hair care sessions at the spa or salons? Well, give the chemical treatments a rest and try your hand at going au natural.

"Use the extra time at hand and give your hair the nourishment it deserves and whip these simple hair masks from products available in your kitchen. With the right ingredients you can create your own hair masks and witness your hair going from dab to fab," says Dr BL Jangid, dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon, SkinQure Clinic.

So, here are his suggestions for hair masks that you can use for specific hair problems:

Frizz be gone

"Frizzy and dry hair can be an unpleasant sight but the solution to any problem begins with identifying the roots of the problem. Most of the times frizzy hair can be a result of hot showers, excessive shampooing, over-styling or using hair products that contain excessive sulphate or alcohol. A change in the lifestyle habit can do wonders to get rid of the frizz," says  Dr Jangid.

  • Mix 6 tbsp of besan with 5 tbsp of curd with 2 tbsp of olive oil.

  • Apply the mixture and leave it on for 20 minutes

  • Wash it with shampoo and don’t forget to condition.

Whereas, besan will strengthen your roots curd and oil will provide shine and moisture to your hair.

Dandruff, dandruff everywhere

"An irritated and flaky scalp can be quite a bothersome situation. While dietary deficiency and hormonal changes may lead to dandruff, the most common reason is weather change and imbalance in the oil of the scalp," he says.

  • Mix 2 tbsp of lemon juice with yoghurt and some rice water and apply on your hair for 30 minutes

  • Rinse it off with a mild shampoo

  • Avoid tying your hair tightly for a day after.

  • Don’t apply lemon directly onto the scalp as this may cause irritation.

Rice water contains selenium which can eliminate the yeast responsible for dandruff. Whereas the citric acid in the lemon contains anti-microbial properties which can further help in eradicating dandruff.

Hair fall 101

"If losing your hair is making you lose your sleep; this hair mask is going to be a miracle. There are several factors that can be attributed to hair loss, the most common one being stress, deficiency of iron or anaemia. For a voluminous hair, flaxseeds are something we swear by," says Dr Jangid.

  • Soak some flaxseeds in the water overnight

  • Boil two cups of water with the flaxseeds

  • Once it thickens, squeeze half a lemon

  • Let it cool

  • For more nourishment, add a few drops of the essential oils

  • Leave on the hair overnight, shampoo the next morning

Flaxseeds are highly rich in omega-3 fatty acids and proteins which can provide the oomph and the extra volume you need for your hair.

Brighten up dull and limp hair

"For all the right reasons, aloe vera plant has been a favourite of moms and grand-moms in their beauty regime. Aloe vera has a myriad of constituents which can be highly beneficial for the hair, water, vitamins, lectins, minerals, mannans and can be used in any form. There are several causes for your dull hair such as chlorinated water, dietary deficiency, using harsh products to name a few," says Dr Jangid.

  • Mix 2 tbsp of aloe vera gel with 1 tbsp of honey and coconut oil

  • Massage well into the hair in circular motions

  • Let it rest for half an hour then rinse with a mild shampoo

This mask will deeply condition your dull hair adding bounce and shine to them.

Split ends no more

"Long hair and split ends are like synonyms. Usually, to get rid of split ends, people end up getting their hair trimmed. Our hair has to fight the daily dust, sun damage, pollution and heat which can lead to the hair splitting apart making them look brittle and damaged," he says.

  • Mix egg yolk with 2 tbsp of honey, olive oil and almond oil

  • Apply the mask for 45 mins

  • Wash off with lukewarm water

In this mask, the egg is the protagonist as it contains high proteins which can prevent the slit ends and strengthen your hair, while also further moisturizing them.
