If you have dry skin, you are well aware of irritation and discomfort. Dry skin is extremely sensitive and if not treated can lead to various issues like ageing, uneven skin tone, dullness and redness. Slathering on moisturisers will give momentary relief. Dr Blossom Kochhar, veteran beauty expert and founder of Blossom Kochhar Aroma Magic, says, “Layering your skin with moisturisers, creams, lotions could still give you a dry patch. We need to understand that dry skin needs a great amount of moisturisation which a moisturiser alone cannot give.” She recommends five best essential oils that will intensely moisturise your skin and will make it smooth and hydrated throughout the day.
Sandalwood oil: The oil has been used for centuries in Ayurveda and Aromatherapy for its anti-septic and anti-bacterial properties. "Apart from the aromatic property, this oil acts as a wonderful moisturiser and a great purifier for the skin," says Blossom.
Neroli essential oil: It is extracted from the flowers of bitter orange trees and is also known as orange blossom oil. It is a good skin rejuvenator. "It has antimicrobial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties that help treat acne and other skin problems," she says.
Rose essential oil: The oil extracted from roses, is excellent for skin hydration. It is anti-inflammatory and also "helps the skin to stay nourished for a longer time," adds Blossom.
Jasmine essential oil: This floral aromatic oil is extensively used for dry skin care. It enhances skin elasticity and moisturises the skin. It also helps reduce blemishes and eliminate dryness.
Patchouli essential oil: This oil is extracted from the leaves of the patchouli plant. 'It enhances the appearance of the skin. It helps reduce wrinkles, blemishes, and treat acne and eczema," says Blossom.
How to Take Care of Dry Skin
Dry skin needs extra attention. To get long term results, you need to follow a regular routine. Blossom suggests a step-by-step guide to get well-nourished and glowing skin. Here's what you should do:
1. Cleanse your face with a cleansing milk or a cream cleanser.
2. Apply a home-made toner to your skin. Make this toner by blending 10 drops of rose essential oil to 100 ml of rose water.
3. To moisture, add 3 drops of sandalwood essential oil, 1 drop of geranium essential oil, 1 tablespoon of almond oil, and 1 teaspoon of castor oil. Gently massage a few drops of this mix on your face. Use a hot compress and apply a moisturiser.
For an easy DIY facepack, mash half of a banana in a bowl. Mix it with 1 tablespoon of milk powder, 1/2 teaspoon of honey, 1/2 teaspoon of yoghurt (enough to make a paste), and 2 drops of lavender oil. Apply this pack on your face and leave it on for15-20 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water.
Besides these, you can also include the oils mentioned above in your daily beauty routine, here's how:
1. Add 1 drop of any of these oils with 1 teaspoon of almond oil for a nourishing face massage.
2. For body massage, mix a few drops of oil listed above with a moisturiser.
