After many people across the globe 'discovered' their hidden curly hair, courtesy @thedaniellelife, curly girl hacks seem to have taken over the social media. The TikTok user opened a portal of hidden curls with her simple hair washing routine using Aussie shampoo and conditioner.
Soon enough many other followed suit with their favourite hair products and discovered for the first time that they actually have curly hair instead of wavy or straight.
So, if you too have recently found out that you actually have curly hair, here are some of the viral #CurlyGirl hacks that actually work:
Brushing hair in the shower
Curly hair type is dryer and more in need of hydration as compared to straight hair. So, a weekly hair mask and a conditioner after shampooing is a must. Moreover, you also need to avoid brushing dry curly hair. Not only will dry-brushing ruin your curl pattern but it may also cause split-ends and breakage. So, the key is to brush and detangle your curly hair in the shower, after applying a hair conditioner for smoother, shinier hair.
Invest in curl-friendly products
Everyone's hair type is different but there are some curly-girl-approved brands that feature in almost every #CurlyGirlHack videos. So, invest in sulphate and paraben-free hair products with intense moisturising ingredients such as Miracle Curl Collection by Aussie, Shea Moisture, Garnier Fructis’ Curl Nourish collection etc. The Denman Brush is also one of the popularly vouched for accessory that is supposed to be used on wet curly hair to activate your curl pattern.
This viral method involves drying your freshly-washed curls with an old cotton t-shirt or a microfibre towel. All you need is to apply your chosen curl cream or leave-in conditioner, turn your head upside down and let all your lie on the t-shirt/towel. Now, roll it into a turban and keep it on for at least 30 minutes. Once you let your hair down, let it air-dry and avoid touching the hair. This method soaks up the excess product from the hair and results in voluminous, well-defined curls.
Silk pillowcase or scarf
The easiest way to retain the shine and bouncy volume of wash-day curls is to make sure you have the curly night-time routine down to a pat. This involves sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase to minimise friction, frizz and split-ends. Another way is to follow the 'pineapple hair do' that involves taking all your curls and tying an Arian Grande-esque ponytail on the crown of your hair. Now, secure their hairstyle in place with a silk or satin scarf to wake up with voluminous curls.
