See What's Lurking Inside Your Makeup Sponge by Cutting It in Half

Dying to know what lies beneath your makeup sponge? You're not the only one. People have been satisfying their urges lately by cutting their old makeup sponges in half to see what's been growing on the inside, and what they found will surprise you.

Reddit user doulikecookies decided to try it and document her experience along the way. She cut open her Real Techniques makeup sponge and posted the pictures to the r/makeupaddiction subreddit. It actually isn't as gross as I thought it would be.

She posted a bunch more photos here. Come to find out, she isn't the only one. There's actually a whole community of Reddit users who cut open their makeup sponges on the regular. Some are just curious about what it looks like on the inside, and others actually want advice about what it's supposed to look like.

This is a prime example of a sponge that has not been cleaned properly:

The above photo was posted by user beauty_blend, who was concerned that she wasn't cleaning her makeup sponge correctly. Thanks to her Reddit community, who left a ton of comments to help her figure out what was going wrong, she found out she needed to use a different kind of soap.

You might even be pleasantly surprised when you cut open your makeup sponge to find that it's actually spotless. Like this user, LadyofAcheron, who halved her beautyblender after she found a small hole forming on the outside.

"I've always been curious how clean the inside of the sponge could actually get. For some reason I always thought it would be dirty in the middle, or even worse moldy! I decided now was the time to satisfy my curiosity and took a pair of scissors to the lil guy," she wrote. "The results surprised me! Besides the two spots I couldn't seem to get clean, it was spotless! So, now you know!"

No lie, the thought of cutting open my makeup sponge to see the inside does frighten me a bit. What if it's super disgusting? Whatever, I still might try it. I do have to say though, it is comforting to know that I'd have a whole community of supporters behind me on Reddit who are into the same sort of thing.
