The Key Nail Trends For Autumn/Winter 2017

The colours and styles to try from the fashion week runways

Mugler

Trend: barely there

The nails at Mugler, created by Marian Newman, were designed to blend in. They were neatly manicured before a choice of two colours, Kure Bazaar's Nail Polish in French Rose and French Nude, both £15, were used for a healthy-looking finish.

Balenciaga

Trend: logos

The trend for "bad taste is good taste" was given a subtle nod through the BB logos hand-painted onto the models' thumbnails at Balenciaga. To add the necessary sheen, Kure Bazaar's Clean Base Coat and Dry Finish Top Coat, both £15, were also used.

Temperley

Trend: semi-shine

Essie's new spring collection, specifically its Spin the Bottle shade, was the varnish of choice at Temperley. The manicures focused on keeping the models' natural nails, making them neat, tidy and short, while the absence of a top coat gave the look a partial shine.

Roland Mouret

Trend: individualism

The looks at Roland Mouret were truly unique for each model, as they chose their own Christian Louboutin varnish colour as the final touch to their catwalk looks. This added an extra dimension to the "immaculately polished" nails.

Mary Katrantzou

Trend: bare

The simplest of trends was seen, or more accurately not seen, at Mary Katrantzou, where nails were left natural and well-groomed, with just a coat of lacquer to keep them looking understatedly healthy.

Emilia Wickstead

Trend: pretty pastels

The trend for nude-pink varnish was seen again at Emilia Wickstead, matching the muted tones of the designer's collection. The look was natural, "glossy, refined and chic", created using a single coat of Nailberry's L'Oxygéné in Elegance, £14.50, for a "barely there" manicure.

Mulberry

Trend: dark metallics

To avoid colour staining your nails when recreating Mulberry's steely look, ensure you start with a good base coat and top off your favourite dark-grey to jet-black varnish shade with high gloss for maximum impact.

Paul Costelloe

Trend: haute red

The traditional bold red manicure showed itself alive and well at the autumn/winter 2017 shows. At Paul Costelloe, the models' nails were short, a little rounded and painted with Orly's Haute Red shade, £9.50, and given a matte top coat.

Sophia Webster

Trend: frosted French

Echoing the collection's ice-queen theme, the lead nail technician Rebecca Jade Wilson, chose Orly's Rose Coloured Glasses, £10.50, as the base colour for the show's nail design and added a frosted touch of white glitter to the models' fingertips.

Julien Macdonald

Trend: pink sci-fi

The "clean, natural nails" at Julien Macdonald would have been understated had it not been for one detail. Along the cuticle – on the skin rather than the nail itself –lines of silver pen produced "the matrix manicure", linking to the sci-fi of the collection", which, when covered with the top coat, looked like it was stemming from "underneath the skin".

Daks

Trend: textural silver

The nail artist Sophie Harris-Greenslade revealed that "tartan nail art" was considered in the early concept stages at Daks' autumn/winter 2017 show, but was soon replaced by what she believes will be a big trend: "textural silvers that have been matted down." The chosen colour was RMK's Classic Silver, £14, from its new range, a light-silver metallic shade that was paired with a base and top coat for matted-down shine.

Jeremy Scott

Trend: lightning red

Miss Pop, the creative ambassador for CND Nails, went for an unexpected red manicure at Jeremy Scott. Start by using a layer of the brand's Electric Orange, £12.45, followed by the true red of Wildfire, also £12.45, for a colour that truly pops.

Novis

Trend: dark florals

As the Novis collection was "heavily influenced by the designer's boyfriend's grandparents' vintage floral couch", the nail technician Alicia Torello "painted sporadic flowers and leaves against a black background all over the nails in no particular order" using a range of Christian Louboutin Nail Colours, £38 each.

Cushnie Et Ochs

Trend: nail art

At Cushnie Et Ochs, Torello was inspired by the collection's "metallic undertones", aiming to "play off of the elements of shimmer and sequins but keep it cool and simple". To do so, she used Christian Louboutin's Nail Colour in La Favorita, £38, before finishing off the look with silver stripping tape.

Zadig & Voltaire

Trend: cuticle art

At Zadig & Voltaire, varnish wasn't limited to the models' deep-blue nails, but it was also applied, in graphic black, along the cuticle line. As a result, we'd recommend investing in a nourishing cuticle oil, like the one from Neal's Yard, £12, before trying this daring look.
