The Reason Anne Hathaway Is Giving Up Alcohol for 18 Years

FYI, we've got a new thing to add to your list of 'reasons Anne Hathaway is totally admirable'. If it weren't enough that she's an avid campaigner of women's rights, or that she won't stand for body-shaming BS, she's also planning to ditch alcohol for an entire 18 years.

Eighteen years. That's a pretty specific number (and a loooong amount of time to go without a warming glass of red on a freezing cold day, can I just say). What a noble woman.

But the Oceans Eight actor explained during an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show the reason she's decided to quit drinking for almost two decades - and it's all to do with her son (uh, and her hangovers).

"I quit drinking back in October, for 18 years," said Anne. "I'm going to stop drinking while my son is in my house just because I don’t totally love the way I do it and he's getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings."

Recalling a time where she was feeling the effects of the booze but had kind of important stuff to do, like taking her kid to nursery, Anne said:

"I did one school run one day where I dropped him off at school, I wasn’t driving, but I was hungover and that was enough for me. I didn't love that one."

And it's a fair point. I can't function on a hangover, let alone organise myself and be responsible for a small human at the same time.

Anne and her husband Adam Schulman welcomed their son, Jonathan, back in 2016, which will make him around 20 when he can hit the bar with his mum (if he drinks in the UK, that is, remember it's illegal in the US until the age of 21). But if Anne and Adam decide to go on and have any more children, who knows if that 18-year figure might extend any further?

The Oscar-winning actor also told Ellen DeGeneres a story of a time she and her husband got super-pissed with Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila Alves while they were filming Serenity on the island of Mauritius.

"We drank the night away, and then I had to go to a meeting with Steven Knight, our director, the next day, and I was just kinda - have you guys ever had to go to a meeting hungover?" she asked the Ellen audience. "I was just kinda stumbling in with one eye open."

Relatable. (Except the bit about shooting a movie and being in Mauritius, obviously).

Good luck to Anne and her alcohol-free endeavours. You're a far more disciplined woman than myself.
