Uday Chopra's Suicidal Tweets Have Everyone Talking About the Importance of Mental Health

Discussions on mental health seem to have always been considered a taboo topic in our country. Though more and more people are bringing it out into the open in today's day, the change is slow and gradual at best.

When Deepika Padukone spoke out about her struggle with depression a few years ago, she put this much closeted topic out in the limelight and brought about a discussion that was a long time coming. And now, actor Uday Chopra's recent dark and suicidal tweets have brought this topic to the forefront, yet again. Uday took to Twitter to post two alarming tweets a few days ago, only to delete them quickly afterwards. Here is what they said:

His posts, quite rightly, spurred a lot of public concern, by fans and other people who saw them in circulation. With everyone alarmed, the erstwhile Bollywood actor took to Twitter once again to post this clarifying statement:

So while he has clarified that he was talking about leaving social media for good, some of his fans seem to have taken his comments quite seriously. “Is Uday Chopra alright,” asked a fan on Twitter. “#UdayChopra hope u r well!,” wrote another. Even if this was his take at dark humour gone wrong, the fact remains that Indian society needs to talk about depression.

Depression is a cause of many serious health conditions, both physical and mental. It can be an unending cycle, and if not treated properly, can affect the social, work and family life of its patients in many serious ways. India's rank on the global list of Happiest Nations is alarmingly low at 140 out of 156. The World Health Organisation’s global health estimates on depression for the year 2015 had estimated that over five crore Indians suffered from depression, while over three crore others suffered from anxiety disorders. Given that the condition is treatable, it's time more people, especially celebrities, started talking openly about it to create more awareness. Even if Uday Chopra was not serious about his Tweets, we do hope they can be used to spur on conversations about mental health in our country and create much needed awareness, don't you?
