Twitter Can’t Get Enough of the ‘Game of Thrones’ Emmys Self-Submissions

• The final season of Game of Thrones was nominated for 32 Emmys, which is a record for a single season of a show.
• After the show didn’t nominate Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy), Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), and Carice Van Houten (Melisandre) for acting Emmys, they submitted themselves and it worked!

Let’s be real, fans were not thrilled about Game of Thrones’ final season, but I think there are a few stellar acting moments we can all agree were fantastic. I mean, who wasn’t also crying when Brienne of Tarth’s eyes welled up at her knighthood? And when Theon finally redeemed himself as a good man? Or when Melisandre gave Arya a literal world-saving pep talk?? Turns out, the Emmys committee totally agreed—regardless of HBO’s opinion. The network nominated seven Game of Thrones actors for awards, but Alfie Allen, Gwendoline Christie, and Carice Van Houten were excluded and had to do it themselves.

To say Twitter is not happy with HBO would be a biiit of an understatement:

FYI, turns out, it’s actually pretty easy to submit yourself for an Emmy. That is, once you’re in the television industry and a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (okay, that bit might be a little challenging for us regular people—but if you’re in Game of Thrones, it’s probs fine). The submission fee is $255, which Alfie, Gwendoline, and Carice all paid themselves. Of course, networks usually end up paying way more than that to promote their nominees, but it’s why tons of actors self-submit. That being said, it’s super rare for self-submitted actors to actually get nominated. If any of the trio end up winning, it could totally be a game changer for how the Emmys runs things, and who doesn’t love that?
