Kate Winslet, who plays the lead as Marianne “Mare” Sheehan in the hit series Mare of Easttown on Disney+ Hotstar, recently revealed in an interview to The New York Times that she refused director Craig Zobel’s offer to edit her body to hide her “bulgy bit of belly” in a sex scene.
Mare is a middle-aged detective investigating the murder of a young girl. Kate wanted her character to be as relatable as possible. She said in her interview to The New York Times: “Listen, I hope that in playing Mare as a middle-aged woman — I will be 46 in October — I guess that’s why people have connected with this character in the way that they have done because there are clearly no filters.” She added: “She’s a fully functioning, flawed woman with a body and a face that moves in a way that is synonymous with her age and her life and where she comes.”
So when Craig offered to show her in a flattering light by editing out the “bulgy belly” in a sex scene with co-star Guy Peace, she responded with “Don’t you dare!”
Kate also objected to the alterations made to her appearance on the promotional poster. She sent it back twice after she felt it was too heavily edited. “I’m like: ‘Guys, I know how many lines I have by the side of my eye, please put them all back,’’ she told the New York Times.
At a time when filtered and airbrushed images have taken over most screens, Kate’s decision to be real with all the wrinkles, flaws and a bulgy belly is heartening and inspiring.
