4 Times Anushka Sharma Shut Down Cricketing Controversies Like a Pro

Anushka Sharma who is currently in England along with her husband Virat Kohli for the World Test Championship has been a number of times embroiled in cricketing controversies. Recently, former Indian selector MSK Prasad broke his silence over the tea controversy, agreeing that her name was unnecessarily dragged into it. It was alleged that the selectors were busy serving tea to Anushka at the 2019 Cricket World Cup. There have been several occasions where the wife of the Indian skipper has been unfairly dragged into controversies. We look back at some if these instances and her laudable response each time.    

Tea controversy during the 2019 Cricket World

During the 2019 Cricket World Cup, former Indian team captain Farokh Engineer blamed the selection committee led by MSK Prasad for the poor performance of the Indian team. He raised raised questions over the eligibility of the selectors and had mocked them by saying that they were busy serving tea to Anushka who had watched the game from the family box. This statement of the former cricketer did not go down well with Anushka who took to Twitter to issue a clarification, urging everyone to not drag her name unnecessarily into such “fabricated stories.”

 

2. Sunil Gavaskar’s comment during IPL 2020

During a match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab, Virat dropped two catches and managed to score only a single run while on the pitch. RCB eventually lost the match and this led to Sunil Gavaskar’s remark that Virat had only practised to Anushka’s bowling in the lockdown. He was referring to Kohli-Anushka’s lockdown video where they were spotted playing cricket. Anushka called out Gavaskar for the “distasteful” remark and put out her thoughts about the incident on her Instagram stories.

3. Dinner at Indian High Commission in England  

During the Indian cricket team's tour of England in 2018, the Indian tea was invited to dinner at the Indian High Commission in England. As photos from the dinner surfaced on social media, people noted that Anushka was the only family member of an Indian player who was present on the occasion. Netizens questioned her presence and later on Anushka released a statement clarifying that she was invited to dinner by the High Commissioner and his wife.

4.  Being blamed for Virat’s poor performance in 2016

Virat and Anushka made all efforts to keep their relationship private till their wedding date. However, as many suspected they were together, Anushka was several times criticised for Virat’s poor show on field. Things became a little ugly in 2016 as many cricket fans trolled Anushka and made unpleasant remarks about her. Virat defended her by putting out a tweet in her support. Anushka however maintained a dignified silence this time and let the matter resolve on its own.
