When it comes to Doja Cat, we've come to expect the unexpected. Especially when it comes to her fashion style. She was practically unrecognisable when she covered her entire body in 30,000 red Swarovski crystals to attend the Schiaparelli show at Paris Fashion Week back in January of this year. And who can forget Doja's Met Gala look that was inspired by Karl Lagerfeld's (this year's theme) beloved cat Choupette? Demonstrating her commitment to the character, the artist conducted an interview with Emma Chamberlain on the red carpet entirely in meows.
But today, we're talking about Doja's latest look. While it can't be classed in the same category as the two 'fits previously mentioned, it caught our attention thanks to her choice of accessory. Heading on a night out wearing a lingerie micro mini dress, Doja added pink fluffy arm warmers to her ensemble.
Of all the Y2K trends we've seen come back into the mainstream this year – cargo pants, butterfly tops, charm necklaces, chain belts, low-rise everything, the list goes on – arm warmers making a come back was not on our 2023 bingo card. Originally associated with the '80s and often worn with lycra and coordinating leg warmers, millennials will recall fingerless gloves did have a '00s resurgence.
Doja styled the controversial accessory with a nude lingerie-style dress embroidered with pink flowers that tapped into the underwear-as-outerwear trend. As well as its micro hemline, the dress also featured slits at either side that were tied at the waist with ribbons. She had on black knickers underneath, adding heels to her feet. Arm warmers may be a trans-seasonal solution to this in-between weather we're experiencing where it's no longer summer but not cold enough to warrant a coat, but the jury is still out on whether they'll catch on anytime soon.
