Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao Are Down With This Life-Threatening Disease

It spread terror across the country when it first developed, few years ago—that dreadful life-threatening disease that went viral, called 'swine flu'.

And sadly, it is back again with full vengeance. Bollywood's favourite actor, Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran Rao are infected by the H1N1 virus aka swine flu, and revealed the same in a video conference set up from their home for an event that they were supposed to attend.

Aamir revolutionised the social system when he begun his reality show with a social propaganda called Satyamev Jayate. The show was a hit, and people loved the raw, key social issues that were tackled on it—episode by episode.

Recently, the Paani Foundation, an NGO that is run by the actor and his director-wife, Kiran Rao organised the Satyamev Jayate Water Cup—an inter-village competition on watershed management and water conservation. The NGO works towards creating a drought-free Maharashtra, and it was their annual prize distribution day, a very crucial day for them to celebrate villagers' achievements.

Unfortunately, the couple were being treated at home, and were strictly advised to be in isolation so as not to spread the deadly virus, which is why they had to skip the event. However, this did not stop them from sharing their message via video-conference to an audience that included Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Reliance Foundation founder, Nita Ambani.

"It is a very happy day for us, but we are upset that after putting in efforts for one year, we could not be there to celebrate the day with you. We have been detected with H1N1 virus. It is known as swine flu commonly. It spread easily and therefore we have to remain in isolation for a week," said Aamir Khan.

Film Companion journalist, Anupama Chopra took to Twitter to break the news, and fans throughout the country went berserk!

Moreover, the actor honoured 'Friendship Day' that was celebrated worldwide on the first Sunday of August—by urging his friend, Shah Rukh Khan to attend the event on his behalf, an offer he graciously accepted. Aww!

Dr. Mini Khetarpal, epidemiology in-charge at the BMC, supported Aamir's decision of staying at home and protecting other innocent lives."Home isolation cuts the chain of transmission of viruses like H1N1. A busy person like him may go out and land up infecting many others."

She also revealed that doctors need to regularly monitor the people who have come in contact with infected patients as well, since the illness is highly contagious, whereas testing and hospitalisation is not mandatory for swine flu if symptoms are not grave.

Till date, swine flu has infected over 3,500 people in Maharashtra and killed 366, with the biggest spurt witnessed last month. In Mumbai this year, 850 cases and 16 deaths have been reported so far. We severely pray for the speedy recovery of the Khans, and the umpteen other people who are battling this life-threatening disease.
