Aamir Khan Just Made a Comment About Religious Intolerance and Twitter is On Fire

​Earlier this month, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan expressed his views on issue of secularism in the country during a question-and-answer session with Twitter users, moderated by Rajdeep Sardesai. Needless to say, there were reactions.

And while Shah Rukh Khan's comments garnered a lot of attention, it was actor Aamir Khan's recent comments that have received more criticism than support.

At the Ramnath Goenka Awards for Excellence Journalism and in conversation with Anant Goenka, Aamir Khan said a number of things that have put him in the line of fire.

When asked if he endorsed the recent acts of creative people returning awards, Aamir Khan responded with,  "For creative people, to voice what they feel is important. A number of creative people — historians and scientists — have increasingly had a certain feeling that they feel they need to express. One of the ways of expressing their dissatisfaction or disappointment is to return awards."

And while that comment was applauded, his next one has become the subject of anger. Here's his entire video:

Now it's worth mentioning that Aamir made a lot of valid points. The fact that there is a growing sense of despondency in the country in the last six to eight months is a view that many have expressed. The fact that the citizen of a country feels secure when his or her elected representatives take strong stands against injustice and in turn help speed up the legal progress is an acute observation. And finally, the fact that we need to stop associating an act of terror with the religion of the person who inflicted terror is something we all need to remember.

And so, when these comments received only appreciation, why is it that his next observation is being far from appreciated. Here's what he said:

"Kiran and I have lived all our lives in India. For the first time, Kiran said to me, should we move out of India? That's a disastrous and a very big statement for Kiran to make to me. She fears for her child. She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers everyday. That does indicate that there is a sense of growing disquiet."

But there were others still, who empathized with Aamir's views. And respected his opinions.

But the thing to take away from this is simple: if a Bollywood celebrity, who can afford all the security in the world, is fearful of the state of affairs of the country today, what level of fear would the common man be experiencing?  ​
