Rihanna Discovered a Brand-New Way to Wear a Purse

Recently, ​Rihanna attended a basketball game between the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center​ in L.A. She looked fabulous and impossibly cool in an all-white ensemble complete with white hiking boots and a diamond choker wrapped around a black and white bandana that was neatly folded and tied around her neck. The sharp edges of the choker make me think it was probably not a choker at all, but a necklace that style-savvy Rihanna chose to repurpose to dazzling effect as only she could. 

The diamonds looked relatively ordinary compared to Rihanna's other non-necklace-necklace of the night though — a white Dior crossbody bag, which she wore around her neck, hanging in front of her like an oversized pendant. 

On anyone else, one would probably rightly assume this was a mistake rather than a styling choice — that the bag had maybe swung around before it could be put it on properly — but this is Rihanna we're talking about, and if anyone is going to wear a cross body bag as a necklace on purpose, it's her. She can wear anything any way she wants. She could wear diapers on her kneecaps and we'd all swoon.

Yes, it's an odd look, but no more strange than what how the bags at the Proenza Schouler show were styled in New York City last month — slung around necks and under armpits as if the models got stuck putting them on and decided to say "fuck it" and walk the runway as they were rather than going through the trouble of untangling themselves. 

At the end of the day, there is only so much you can do with clothes and accessories. New styling tricks, if such things even exist, are rare and always a little bit strange. That's probably why they hardly ever make it into the mainstream. Then again, if anyone can sell a look to the masses, it's Rihanna. Rihanna could sell sand to the desert. So, if you ​do start seeing women wearing bags around their necks while you're walking down the street, you'll know who to blame: Rihanna. Gorgeous, insane, impossibly cool, frontierswoman-of-style Rihanna.
