Tulle cool to miss
Over the year, we have come to trust that Deepika Padukone will dish out a systematic dose of artistic expression. But she made her most noteworthy appearance yet at Cannes 2019, in a lime-green Giambattista Valli gown, complete with the outré hairband. This outfit unveiling was proof of Deepika’s transformation from sartorial neophyte to risk-taker, and even the haters had to agree—this arrival was one that simply couldn’t be ignored.
Living in technicolour
Mundane is a word that does not exist in Ranveer Singh’s sartorial dictionary. Clearly. From a leopard- print suit with golden shoes to an all-red one with a beret, and all else that could typically be frowned-upon, Ranveer made headlines all year round for his louche, idiosyncratic choices, including many an (extra) accessory. You won’t find us complaining!
IN pursuit of the (perfect) Suit
Dudes in suits—we’re such fans. But while a classic, black suit is always a winner, we do enjoy the occasional ‘statement suit’. Case in point: Shahid Kapoor, in this metallic number by Amit Aggarwal, who proves you can have a little fun with a signature silhouette. The rich suiting, accented with texture and twists, exemplifies ‘urban luxe’.
Shade-on-shade might just be our favourite trend of the decade...and certainly of 2019. Kareena Kapoor Khan made a strong case for pinks with reds, giving us other ideas of electric yellow with blue, deep oranges with fuschia, et al. Neutral-loving girls needn’t panic, though—play with blacks, browns, greys, and burgundys, with one vibrant hue thrown in via bag or shoes. You’re meant to stand out, so mix and match to your heart’s content...three colours at a time, tops, though.
The Pantsuit Queen
Ah, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja the ultimate arbiter of style... In 2019, we saw her take a shine to the pantsuit trend—and do a darn good job of it. The monochrome version seemed to be a favourite, and the result was mega glamour without a trying-too-hard vibe.
Monotone: Katrina Kaif
There’s nothing more effective than head-to-toe colour, and it’s a trend doing the rounds on red-carpets everywhere. In 2019, there was plenty of inspiration, to help work this trend: think single-hued pantsuits, vivid jumpsuits, shaded co-ord sets. And the message was clear: it’s time to ditch a Morticia Addams wardrobe for one with pastels (lavender, light blue, et al) and bolder shades (maroons and browns, etc).
The Tux Brigade: Hritik Roshan
All those in favour of the sexy tuxedo, say aye! Yep, thought so. Luckily, the suit’s fancier brother made many an appearance this year, bringing with it some unexpected personality additions, too. From the quintessential black dinner jacket, to white and blue, texture, and more, everything
was a go.
Others from The class of 2019: Ananya Panday
From thigh-skimming minis and sweeping gowns to structured suits and concept saris—the year saw a mélange of great looks worth more than just a mention, dished out by these fabulous honorees. (Special shout-out to the ’Gram for making pre-event photoshoots a thing!). Thigh-high slits, bold shoulders, décolleté necklines in metallics, sheer, prints and more: it was a delight to see these ladies display their sartorial proficiency.
