The Astrological Explanation Behind Love Triangles

Love triangles suuuuuck. Whether you’re the one in love with someone else’s partner or the one worried about your boo falling for someone else—or in the MIDDLE of the triangle trying to figure out which person you actually want to be with—it’s the absolute worst.

Love triangles can mess up even the most seemingly solid of relationships, ruin friendships, destroy reputations, and all around just make everyone a little bit miserable. But luckily, there’s at least an astro-planation for them!

If you’re a Libra, Gemini, Pisces, or Sagittarius, you’re especially prone to love triangles (sorry!), but truly, none of us are safe from them. Read on to find out the three different types of love triangles plus what astro events make them even more likely to happen:

THE CHASE

the chase

This is the classic love triangle: One person is torn between two people who like them, cuing the “chase” for their affections. Due to their natural charisma and flirtatiousness, Gemini and Sagittarius are the two signs most likely to be chased, but self-assured, sometimes distant Taurus can also put off a vibe that makes people just want to pursue them.

Now here are the common chasers: Aries and Scorpio are the more persistent ones because they’re ruled (or in Scorpio’s case, co-ruled) by Mars, the planet of ambition, aggression, and libido. Then there are Pisces, Libra, and Virgo, who are simply turned on by people who are mysterious and a little hard to get with. However, Pisces will eventually get their feelings hurt and give up, Libra will get bored and find someone else to be into, and Virgo will be PISSED that they’re not prioritized.

THE SABOTEUR

the

Okay, so this one’s been the source of drama since humans were alive, probably: A third person butts into an existing couple’s relationship. They’ll inject their opinions and influence into the relationship with the sole purpose of causing a breakup and snagging the person they have their eyes on. They may not actually succeed in the end, but man, do they cause some weird fights either way!

Here, the “prize” or person being sought out is usually a Cancer, Libra, or Pisces, solely because they can be a little people-pleasing and oblivious. Like, this is that person who gets VERY CLEARLY flirty texts but genuinely thinks the intent is innocent—or they just don’t want to confront them.

Obvs, for the saboteur’s plan to work, the partner they’re subtly criticizing has to be, well, easy to nitpick even if you don’t know them well. While all people have flaws, Leos come off a little egotistical and selfish, Sags give off a li’l blunt and rude energy, and Aquarius is that intellectual, snooty-sounding S.O. the saboteur can easily eye-roll at.

But who is actually most likely to be the critic in all this? Virgo (notices everything), Capricorn (feels extra assured in their opinions), and Gemini (unafraid to say anything plus has that two-faced reputation) all have the qualities of a relationship-ending third party, if that’s what their goal is. Tread carefully!

THE TWO-TIMER

the two timer

This is like The Saboteur but with one huge difference—the person being pursued does cheat and is also the main person in control. They are already in a committed relationship but fall for someone else while refusing to leave said partnership.

The two-timer tends to be a sign who’s particularly indecisive (Gemini), noncommittal (Sagittarius), or super sexual (Taurus). Their partner-in-crime tends to be someone who loves the attention (Leo), falls for people regardless of consequences (Pisces), or is just reaaally good at keeping secrets (Scorpio).

As for the blissfully unaware? It’s likely to be Cancer (too trusting), Capricorn (too loyal), or Aquarius (too in-their-own-world to notice that their partner has been “working late” four nights in a row).

AND TO MAKE IT ALL WORSE...

There are certain astrological events that make the messiness of love triangles really come to life. Here are some to watch out for:

Total solar eclipses

Solar eclipses are huge because they push you to start something new and daring, which, for some people, means a new relationship while they’re already in one or going after someone who’s very clearly monogamous with someone else. Eek!

Lunar eclipses

Lunar eclipses are the opposite of solar ones: They’re all about letting go of baggage to make way for new things. Again, that could mean dumping one partner for another or trying to convince someone else to ditch their S.O.

Mercury Retrogrades

Obvi, these are on here! Depending on which sign Mercury, the planet of communication, is in, they can expose cheating à la discovered sexts, bring up old wounds via some serious fights, and all around make love triangles hurt that much more. The next one coming up is on Halloween AND in Scorpio, the sign of secrets, so more than one mask is probs coming off that night!
