The internet is littered with headlines about the "hack that's going to change your life" and "the revolutionary thing you never knew about blah blah", but this fact about hotel room card slots really is mind-blowing.
It turns out you don't have to use your hotel room card key in order to turn the electricity for the room on. Rather, any card that fits in the slot will work, so you can leave your hotel room and power your bedroom at the same time.
WHAT IS THIS SORCERY? HOW DID WE NOT KNOW THIS? DO OTHER PEOPLE KNOW THIS? DID YOU KNOW THIS? The definition of shook.
While using the hotel room key is admittedly great for making sure you don't lose it (because it's stored right by the door, duh), this is a great hack for being able to charge electricals while you're out, or for one person to go out with the key while another naps.
Travellers' tips (an occasional series): you see, you can use ANY card to work your hotel-room light switch. In this case my Ely Cathedral shop discount card. pic.twitter.com/cID0FgPMNG— Jonathan Jones (@PermSecGLD) March 18, 2018
That you can put anything in the hotel room power slot literally anything doesn't have to be the key card— bc (@444blackcat) March 18, 2018
Apparently, the reason you can use any card (whether that's your Boots advantage or your bus pass) is because it's actually just holding down a switch at the bottom of the slot, rather than using any digital magic.
Wanted to charge my battery pack whilst I was I eating dinner, but needed my keycard pic.twitter.com/TsHqihGxTu— katy moon (@Oog) March 14, 2018
Sadly replacing one card with another may not be applicable in normal every day situations (what do you mean I can't pay with my Nando's card?), but is definitely good to know for when you are.
