Why Ginger Ale is the Best Fizzy Drink to Order On a Plane

If you're not a fan of flying, there are so many tips and tricks dedicated to making the experience a little easier for you. Whether that's what cabin crew eat to guarantee feeling less puffy, or a flight attendant's guide to beating jet lag, so much advice exists to enhance your travelling experience.

The latest nugget of goodness comes from Travel and Leisure, who say you should always order ginger ale as your drink of choice in the air. Why? Namely because the drier air and cabin pressure can dull our sense of taste and smell, meaning you need something with a real kick to offer a refreshing taste.

"When you’re in a plane, a ginger ale’s extra sweetness may not register on your taste buds, making your ginger drink extra-dry and sharp," they explain. "Refreshing."

Beyond the taste, ginger ale also offers calming health benefits, too. In the same way you might be offered a ginger nut biscuit when you're nauseous, ginger ale can also help with indigestion and muscle pain. Great for those long haul flights, then.

So if ginger ale is the drink you definitely should order on a flight, what fizzy drink should you avoid? Surprisingly, cabin crew hate it when you order Diet Coke. " Soft drinks foam up a lot more when poured out of a can, and the worst culprit for this is Diet Coke — I literally have to sit and wait for the bubbles to fall before I can continue pouring," flight attendant blogger These Gold Wings wrote.

“If all 3 passengers ask for Diet Coke I’ll often get them started, take another three drink orders, serve those, and then finish the Diet Cokes."
